Current weather patterns in Sydney coinciding with funnel season have seen an increase in spider bites in 2015.
Peak Season for Sydney Funnel Webs is from November to April. Funnel Webs love Humidity and moisture, so current weather patterns are perfect for Funnel Webs. Funnel Webs dislike dry heat and sun so are active when it’s cooler and favour shady areas during the day. Shady areas could include your house, garden shed or work boots.
The bite is dangerous and can cause serious illness or death. The male venom is more toxic than the female and initial symptoms include local pain, mouth numbness, vomiting, abdominal pain, sweating and salivation. There is an anti-venom available. Bites are usually on a limb. Immediate action should be taken to apply a pressure bandage and immobilise the bitten limb by splinting. Restrict the movement of the victim. If possible, capture the spider for positive identification.
The SMH Reports According to NSW Ambulance, 2015 has already seen a spike in spider bites. In January, 98 cases were attended by paramedics in NSW, with four so far this February. For 2014, paramedics were called out to 319 incidents in Sydney with the majority in Sydney’s west, followed by the north and south-west regions.
